United Airlines Aircraft Mechanic Jobs - The airline is launching a mechanic training program, based on its pilot training initiative, to fill thousands of jobs at United and other airlines.

United Airlines, which came up with a new approach to address the pilot shortage, is now turning its attention to another major aviation pain point: the mechanic shortage.

CEO Scott Kirby said today that United plans to launch an apprenticeship program called Calibrate to help expand the pool of flight mechanics and technicians. The training program has been launched in-house in Houston with existing United employees and will be expanded next year to accommodate interns from outside the company.

The program will roll out near Orlando and San Francisco and eventually include dozens of locations, with the goal of training more than 1,000 people by 2026. United estimates it will need to hire 7,000 technical maintenance workers over the next few years.

As with the pilot training program called Aviate, United is addressing not only the general labor shortage but also the challenge of diversity in the industry. The airline aims for half of its trainees to be women or people of color.

Calibrate is a three-year mechanic training program where trainees learn on the job, get paid to work, but without paying tuition and fees. United estimates the savings for participants will be about $50,000.

The 36-month program is designed as "earn and learn" as interns are paid while completing the certification process and full-time training. Because the training costs participants nothing, they can save as much as $50,000 in training and related expenses.

Kirby said during a question-and-answer session this morning with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo at Willis Tower that United would train about 300 new mechanics a year under the program.

United drew praise and attention from industry rivals shortly before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when the airline announced it was buying its own flight school to train more pilots, with a focus on addressing the issue of diversity. The airline welcomed its first class of students earlier this year.
