A Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is an ideal role in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, CRO, and other healthcare industries. They focus on specific medical areas (eg, oncology, cardiology, CNS, hematology, women's health care) and disease conditions (eg, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, diabetes). MSLs have advanced scientific training and credentials, including doctoral degrees (PhD, pharmacology, or MD) in the life sciences.

Medical science relationships are critical to the success of any company. They work throughout the life cycle of a product, to ensure the products are being used effectively, serve as scientific partners and resources in the medical community, and internal partners within companies. Scientists are experts. However, the primary objective of the MSL role is to establish and maintain peer-to-peer relationships with leading physicians at leading academic institutions and clinics known as key opinion leaders (KOLs).

What Does Liasion Mean

Medical Science Liaison (MSL) was founded in 1967 by Upjohn Pharmaceuticals as a way for scientifically trained field staff to connect with key opinion leaders (KOLs) in various areas of medical research.

Oklahoma Register, 05/01/1995 V.12 No.13

Although it was originally called Medical Science Liaison by Upjohn, over the years and today companies have used different names for this role: Medical Liaison, Medical Manager, Regional Scientific Manager, Clinical Liaison and Scientist. Case Manager Others.

Many companies use different options for the title medical science liaison, even if the roles have similar or comparable responsibilities. The MSL community conducted a survey to see which words were used the most. The most common alternative and equivalent titles include:

Over the years, MSL teams have been composed of individuals with a variety of scientific backgrounds, including: sales representatives, nursing backgrounds, different doctoral degrees, or other clinical backgrounds.

However, the objectives of the MSL role, along with the required academic and scientific background, have evolved over the years since its inception.

In the late 1980s, many companies began requiring applicants for MSL roles to hold a doctoral degree, such as an MD, PharmD, or PhD.

Although historically, MSLs did not require a doctorate to become the education standard in the industry, today a doctorate degree has become the education standard for the MSL role in the industry.

In fact, according to the 2022 MSL Salary and Compensation Survey – which included 2,099 MSL professionals from 60 countries – 77% of US MSLs and 69% of current MSLs globally at all company types and all medical disciplines hold doctorates.

What Does Liasion Mean

Since being founded by Upjohn Pharmaceuticals in 1967, MSLs have become increasingly important to the success of the companies that employ them.

As a result, the MSL business has grown significantly over the past several years, and according to a 2018 Global MSL Society survey, 68% of managers plan to expand the size of their MSL teams in the next two years.

Although the role of MSLs is growing and evolving, the MSL community is still small compared to other businesses in the pharmaceutical industry. The evolution and rapid growth of the role has resulted in the need for a professional community dedicated to the MSL role.

Today is the official International MSL Day, celebrated annually on March 27 to recognize the profession and raise awareness of the importance of the MSL profession worldwide.

Another very important milestone for the profession is establishing board certification for the MSL. Medical Science Communication-Board Certification (MSL-BC®) is the first board certification for the medical science communication profession and is an effort to establish industry-recognized standards for the MSL profession. The Society for Medical Science Communication is committed to providing certification as a Medical Science Communicator (or equivalent title) or to individuals leading a Medical Science Communication team through certification through a specific body of knowledge.

Professionals such as Medical Science Liaison Officers (MSLs) or MSL team managers can validate their field-specific qualifications, skills, and/or knowledge by meeting the requirements and passing the MSL-BC® exam.

Although the role of the MSL varies, regardless of the reasons mentioned above, many aspects and activities are consistent. The easiest way to understand the differences between roles is to read and compare job descriptions.

A great place to do this is the MSL Society Career Center, the only job board dedicated 100% to the MSL career.

A liaison officer is a person who liaises between two or more organizations and coordinates their activities. A common concern. In general, liaison officers serve to make the best use of the resources or services of one organization employed by another organization. Liaison officers often provide technical or subject matter expertise to an organization. As Congress prepares to approve a $2 trillion stimulus bill to cushion the financial impact of the coronavirus, airline unions appear to have made unprecedented progress in expanding protections for their workers.

Aircraft Mechanic Shortage Could Hamper Airline Operations: Travel Weekly

The bill provides $31 billion in direct grants through Sept. 30 to pay 750,000 airline workers, many of whom are unionized, but not most. Of the total, $25 billion is allocated to passenger airlines, $4 billion to cargo airlines, and $3. According to the AFL-CIO's Transportation Trades Department, billions go to contractors, including those who employ caterers and airport workers.

"After the Gulf War, people were laid off with almost no pay," said Joseph Tiberi, chief of transportation at the International Association of Machinists. "After 9/11, people were laid off, they were left with almost no pay protection.

"If it weren't for the rabid lobbying of the labor movement, it would be the same today," Tiberi said. "It's amazing and unprecedented to have protections in this bill where airline workers feel safe in their jobs at least until the end of September."

Defense is unique to the aviation industry, which has been hit hard by the corona virus, but is also the largest industry in the United States. American Airlines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, three of the four largest airlines, have between 80% and 85% of their workforce unionized. About 11% of the workforce nationwide is unionized.

In addition to intense lobbying, Sara Nelson, president of the 50,000-member flight attendant union, has become the public face of the labor movement, appearing regularly on television during efforts to secure job protections in the bill. He said AFA staff initially proposed a plan to help lay the foundation for legislation written by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

"The concept is that these are just grants for payments and benefits," Nelson said. "This is a principle agreed upon by all workers. We want to keep people on payroll, give money directly to people.

"This is an unprecedented victory for frontline aviation workers and an example for all workers to follow," Nelson said. "The grants we won in this bill will save hundreds of thousands of jobs and connect those working in the health care industry."

Nelson noted that the bill covers the entire airline industry — not just airline employees, but also caterers and airport staff — janitors, janitors, wheelchair attendants and security guards.

Many people in Washington - lawmakers and lobbyists for business and jobs - worked around the clock last week to ensure that their priorities were included in the bill.

A number of problems have arisen for labor. During the week of negotiations on the bill, which has to go from the Transportation Committee to the full House, Senate and back, some suspected that restaurants and airport workers might not be included.

Another issue of deep concern Wednesday is that language in the bill would allow the Treasury secretary to request unlimited changes to existing contractual agreements if airlines receive federal loans. Legislative staff from the IAM and the Transport Workers Union worked late Wednesday night to remove the provision.

Unite Here, which represents food service workers, also sought to improve health care, but they introduced provisions in the Senate that would have severely limited the use of federal funds for abortion.

However, the union has secured wage protection for 22,000 food service workers, including the 20,000 it represents. However, "too many of Americans' health care needs remain on the cutting room floor during a global pandemic," said D. Taylor, president of Unite Here, said in a prepared statement.

"Today, 125,000 airport contract workers received some good news amid weeks of stress, fear and uncertainty," SEIU President 32BJ Kyle Bragg said in a prepared statement. "Congress recognized their critical role in the airline industry and humanity during the coronavirus crisis and indirectly added $3 billion to rescue contract workers."

"The IAM legislative team has been working 24/7 since the beginning of this crisis with clear guidelines whose priority is to encourage our members," said IAM Senior Vice President Sito Pantoja on Thursday morning.

Pantoja outlined the changes made by labor to the airline's original proposal. That includes wage protection — "Before the labor deposit, it's just a loan program," he said — the concept is that the funds are only for wages, salaries and employee benefits. .

The IAM and TWU represent not only airline workers, but also workers in other transport sectors, including public transport and rail. In fact, 95% of TWU members are classified as "essential employees".

"The CARES Act comes at a difficult time and provides great relief to our members who have worked to keep the community safe over the past month, putting themselves and their families at great risk," said TWU President John Samuelsen. . "This bill will help ease the financial hardship and uncertainty our members are facing during the pandemic."

Lori Bassani, president of the Professional Association of Flight Attendants, which represents American flight attendants, said: "We have been working around the clock for the past 12 days on the stimulus package, working closely with our partner unions at American Airlines - IAM, TWU, APA, CWA and IBT - to get the most for our members and the industry. making an effort. Also, our union is in daily contact with the American Government Affairs team.

"Air carriers can't get the full package without the support of organized labor — it's that simple," Bassani said. Will you be an aircraft mechanic in 2021? United Airlines Aircraft Mechanic Jobs - The airline is launching a mechanic training program, based on its pilot training initiative, to fill thousands of jobs at United and other airlines.

United Airlines, which came up with a new approach to address the pilot shortage, is now turning its attention to another major aviation pain point: the mechanic shortage.

CEO Scott Kirby said today that United plans to launch an apprenticeship program called Calibrate to help expand the pool of flight mechanics and technicians. The training program has been launched in-house in Houston with existing United employees and will be expanded next year to accommodate interns from outside the company.

The Pros And Cons Of Training To Become An Aircraft Mechanic

The program will roll out near Orlando and San Francisco and eventually include dozens of locations, with the goal of training more than 1,000 people by 2026. United estimates it will need to hire 7,000 technical maintenance workers over the next few years.

As with the pilot training program called Aviate, United is addressing not only the general labor shortage but also the challenge of diversity in the industry. The airline aims for half of its trainees to be women or people of color.

Calibrate is a three-year mechanic training program where trainees learn on the job, get paid to work, but without paying tuition and fees. United estimates the savings for participants will be about $50,000.

The 36-month program is designed as "earn and learn" as interns are paid while completing the certification process and full-time training. Because the training costs participants nothing, they can save as much as $50,000 in training and related expenses.

Kirby said during a question-and-answer session this morning with U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo at Willis Tower that United would train about 300 new mechanics a year under the program.

United drew praise and attention from industry rivals shortly before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when the airline announced it was buying its own flight school to train more pilots, with a focus on addressing the issue of diversity. The airline welcomed its first class of students earlier this year.
